Revision of Tom Clancy's HAWX from Wed, 01/04/2009 - 08:58

Yes it’s that time again, Review time. Now as I know Shad and n0mad have noticed that for the last couple of weeks I have been playing a new game (see above). Now since they have both been nagging me like little girls (:p) about what it’s like it made me think “review time” so with no further adieu shall we get into it.

First things first, if you don’t like flying games then you should go right now because you will not like this review and Shad will post a rant when he finds out that you don’t.
There are not many really strong games that grab you in the aerial combat genre but I have found this game is hard to put down. We will start with the single player campaign.

This can be played on your own or with friends over the net (I have not tried this yet) but either way it is a really gripping story line with good twists. As with a lot of the Tom Clancy games the cinematic at the start and in between missions are to a very high quality. There are many different types of missions that you have to accomplish and some can be very tricky. They range from diving through and canyon about 10mm from the ground to avoid radar detection to defending a very important plane. Also if you have played the Ghost games you will like this as in several missions you are providing close air support to Ghost teams. Allot of the missions you may feel like you are trying to achieve the same things but to keep you from getting bored the creators have thrown in over 50 aircraft for you to play with all with specialised roles a and strengths and weaknesses. Now I’m sorry to burst your bubble but I am not going to go through every one of them because….well… I’m too lazy but I will however show you a few that make me start to drool.

First off the plane that you get towards the end of the campaign it’s the top of the pile in modern air warfare.

The FA-22 Raptor

At least in this game it is a fantastic plane. It has stealth tech so is hard for enemies to get a lock on you and even if they do if you have even a tiny bit of skill you can throw the missile off with ease.

Then we have a very famous close ground support aircraft and one of my favs.

The A-10 Thunderbolt

When it comes to close ground support the buck stops here. If you want to blast through the middle of multiple AA and Sam sites, nail your target and then fly back over them just to rub it in, this is your bird. The Thunderbolt and deal huge damage to ground targets with its nose mounted cannon and missile pods and without breaking a sweat its can take all the damage the enemy can through at it.
However there is a downside if you come up against enemy interceptors you better hope for divine intervention as this plane does not excel at air-air combat.

Now is anyone feeling a bit Top Gun? I know I always am. (those were the good days before Tom Cruise decided he was and alien.)
But anyway back on topic.
We have the F14 Tomcat

This aircraft is a long range interceptor so excels at hitting targets long before they can get you. And YES the wings do move when you’re flying.
It is quite a high speed aircraft so strafing runs of ground targets can get interesting but hey that’s what they made ejector seats for.

Ok so I know what you’re going to say “But Blood I want to go REALLY fast!” And I have just the plane for your. It’s big, long and black. And you all need to get your minds out of the gutter!

The SR-71B Blackbird

This is a fantastic plane that is completely useless, Unless you just want to go like a bat outta hell in which case you will love it. Its unstable and nasty to fly at low speed but once you put that hammer down and hit mach 2 this plane comes into its own and there is nothing like flying that fast about 2 ft from the ground.

And the last plane I’m going to show you is very new like the raptor but it can hover. It was in the latest Die Hard movie.

The F-35

Now while this is a very cool plane since you can’t hover it feels a bit like the poor mans FA-22. In air to air combat its only 2nd to the FA-22 so can more than hold its own in a dogfight but it still doesn’t spin my wheels.

Well that’s that for aircraft team if you want to see the rest you will have to get the game.

Now I think we will look in depth about the game play and GFX. This game has taken allot of flak because it feels more like and arcade game than a Sim. But I think the way you have to look at it is that it’s not realistic but it’s a hell of a lot of fun. One of the first things is the assistance off mode in which you pretty much turn the in flight computer off. You can do far cooler moves but you also run the risk of stalling the aircraft. The best trick is how you can slide the aircraft by using the breaks just like on Top gun. This feature makes dog fights a lot of fun.
Another thing you notice straight away is the fact you have around 70 primary missiles and normally about 20 secondary now as you can guess that’s not possible on a real life aircraft but when I was playing I found that I just didn’t care it was too much fun.
There is also a system called ERS which helps you in tricky situations. I will give you and example. You are taking out ground targets in a city and there is a tank in a group of small buildings. You can just go LEEERROOOY and fire as it will just hit the buildings and that’s not very nice. But if you look at the HUD you will notice a like ERS icon flashing. If you press the corresponding key a bunch on yellow or red triangles will appear on the screen. If you fly the aircraft through these(can be challenging sometimes) it will guide you to the best attack path for the target.
Now all aircraft also have a machine gun of some sort in case you run out of missiles or god forbid the targeting computer stops working ( I tried jiggling the cable). The HUD provides aiming circles for using this weapon so it’s not impossible to use but it’s not too easy.

Now the GFX. In the air the GFX are really good the planes are very detailed and they put allot of time into making it look realistic down the when you break the sound barrier you can see the white cloud form around your aircraft. If you take a really close look at the ground it’s not fantastic but its good enough that it doesn’t ruin the experience of the game.

The multi-player aspect of the game is quite basic. You can fly in a squad of up to 4 players on all the single player maps and it’s just a basic dogfight with the team who get the most amounts of kills in the time allotted wins. While this is fun it can get boring after a while. I’m hoping they mite bring out updates with other types of mult missions. There are (powerups) in multi-player thou which give things like repair bots or weapon restrictions which adds another aspect to the game.

All in all I think this is a really fun game and definite must buy if you in enjoy Aircraft games.

It gets a 9/10 Blood Drops only let down by the lack of multi-player content.

PS3 Dem0

Was very much looking forward to this before demo release dates. After playing the demo on PS3, it just didn’t grab me very well I’m afraid, have not played it since. But I do think that the hurried delay that set back the PC&PS3 demo release dates, played a bit of a part in that PS3 demo not being as successful as it could have been. Was just lacking a few things, and looking forward to any demo, knowing it will be limited, is just hard for me to do too ;p

But I will actually get this for the console eventually, I think that it will be alright once I get into it, and aren’t limited by crappy demo planes and campaign.
The lack of good new combat flight simulators/games just sucks. I don’t even think Janes exist anymore! =’(

I wont give it a Hash Brick rating yet, until I give the demo another go. ;p

Hmm

Thanx for another game review Blood!

I get air sick when i fly in the virtual world so i prefer ground games lolz

Probably already..

Probably already in some bargin bins n0mad, if not the trash one XD

jkz l0lz ;p

I thought that Flight Gear 1.9.1 woulda been a great alternative to MS Flight Sim, but as u said n0mad, the complexity of the control interface between the computer and the aircraft is rediculous. Flying a real F-14 “IS” easier! XD

Just one thing that shits me.. No cross platform multiplayer for PC vs Xbox vs PS3.. I reckon just the console gamers are afraid of hax0rs MUAHHAAHHAHA

Funnily enough..

When I was younger I actually was going to join the air force, but I ran into a problem in the form of high blood pressure. Thankfully the blood pressure has eased back to normal levels, but now that I have a job and all that, I have sort of forgotten about it. I certainly have the reflexes, eyesight and fitness required.

Simply said, I love military aircraft. I have real photo prints from a photographer who used to go up in F-18’s, F111’s and the roulettes. Friend of my father, who is ex navy.

Hawx sounds pretty good, but as stated by others already… WHY OH WHY ISNT THERE ANY NEW REALISTIC MILITARY FLIGHT SIMULATORS!

*cries

Anyone ever play a game called Jetfighter 4? Probably one of the best multi-aircraft player controllable flight sims ever made.

My rant for the day…

Anyone want to develop a realistic flight sim? I can do 3d modelling and concept coding xD

Demo

Going to grab the demo and give this a go. I’m not a flight sim nut or anything, but I do like flying games where you don’t have to spend days learning how to take off. Also like the prospect of a whole team of us flying around doing objectives, even if that’s all there is to the multiplayer.

Demo: http://store.steampowered.com/app/21930/
Full game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/21900/
Looks like it was released last month, so still full price for now ($49.95)

PS3 Dem0 g00d

After playing the PS3 dem0 s0me m0re, I wasn’t going to download the PC demo to be honest, but im sold on the game now. Its good. Its no Janes ATF Gold, but its sufficient.
I even tested the SIXAXIS out for the first time ( hadn’t had anything to test it with until now hehe). I would say you would use the SIXAXIS to SUPPLEMENT your normal flying controlling with the sticks, as it didnt seem to turn as sharply as the aircraft could, but was alot of fun. Turn and bank, and also shake the controller up and down to drop flares.
Definately gonna get this game, but cannot decide weather to get it for PS3 or PC, or both, you guys decide for me ;p

8/10 Hash Bricks. PS3 demo needs abit more polishing and smoothed edges (not that it will get it at this point..), and for normal PS3 controller, switching between the brake controls & acceleration (L2 & R2, the gun trigger like ones) and the yaw controls (L1 & R2, the buttons just above the triggers). However a great dem0, and I look forward to the full version, even if only to be mopped around by st0rmys skillz ;p

Wasnt too bad

Probably the thing I liked the most about it was the voice commands, that said, the voice commands on the demo require you to speak in an american accent ;)

instead of saying radar “ray dar”
you needed to say “ray der”

and the reaction speed of the voice commands started to drive me a little batty. Sometimes it would work almost instantly, other times there was a massive delay… Probably my computer :) Found myself screaming “FUCKING SHOOT ALREADY” to get it to fire off missiles ;)

I found that I couldnt control the aircraft properly during the out of cockpit “assistance off” mode. And the E.R.S. mode didnt even work for me on the PC demo.

2.5/5 Krazy Raisens

Shads opinion

Now, let it be said. I am one for Flying games!
i and freaking awesome at the Ace Combat series, loved the golden oldies such as Red Baron and even forced myself to do the almost impossible takeoffs and landings on B17 Flying Fortress. I even loved the over the top realistic f16.
Now having said that… my Assessment of this game is… SHEET HOUSE! at best 2/5
So whats wrong shad?

first off let me say, maybe i was expecting too much?
but my main criticism are that its trying to do too much, but make it “user friendly” at the same time.. it fails in both respects

credit where credit is due, the game has gloss and planes react well, it got a good range of planes (cant tell if you can play them all tho) the voice coms and wingman controls are straight out of the Acecombat series and when i 1st started i was starting to feel i was in the realm of familiarity…
i was blown away when in the 1st mission i was instructed to turn off the flight assistance. I knew what was going to happen, and was very excited at the concept of being able to do flat spins, flips etc while pulling some serious G-forces… (flight assistance off then forced me into an uncontrollable external camera which didn’t really give me any point of reference and made it almost impossible to fly the plane. I thought this was an attempt to show the look/abilities of the “assistance off” game and i would be able to control it.. Im sure i said… “hey this camera angle is fucked. oh well 1st mission its just trying to show off and there will be a camera angle function somewhere”)
i wasn’t let down and the in game cinematic/game engine/ physics as i threw the plane around was great, not just showing the contrails and afterburners but vapors and the sound barrier halo (even at different speeds at different alts!).
The ERS (what can be described as a StarWars R2 unit which throws a “best possible” course onto your HUD to either attack an enemy or evade one) was a great concept, but took a bit of practice to get used to… I found the evade paths quite predictable and strongly doubted the impact it would have on a REAL human pilot behind me… my opinion is it would be useless!
some other gripes didnt effect me so much (Kraizens – Slow Hard point (missile) Reloading for example) as i am used to this from other flight games.
at this po

mission two, and actual mission.
now let me say, in a rush to get into the action, I forgot the check the camera options… So off i flew into the action whoosh-ka – I turned the flight assistance off to snag a bogy whom was on my six…. only to be disappointed by the fact the camera was still in the dodgy external mode (which takes about 2 seconds to change back and forth and disorientates the flyer).. “wtf, where did he go? F’in camera! this isnt really, ive gotta fix that….” a quick forced stall only just saved my bacon!
then with the shits and after i flung more abuse at the game… i proceeded to exit the mission in order to fix the camera angles.

90minutes later

Following a number of mission starts and stops to fix the “assistance off” camera… i have come to the conclusion that you cant changge the camera!

Therefore my opinion of the game is…. Its Fu<ked!

Credit where it is due – if the game was just a free flight game (with no risk of hitting the ground) to show the game physics in free flight mode… it would be great. but hte camera really stuffs up so much. and the inability to see where your going creates so much of a rick of hitting things infront of you at low altitudes its beyond a joke.

Sorry blood, if you can tell me how to fix the camera ill give it another go!
I was really looking forward to the games ability to have us all on the same side zipping around!

If the camera was fixable id give it a 4/5 – yes that’s how bad the camera really makes it!

Shad

exactly what I thought

exactly what I thought shadow… waiting for a camera fix, otherwise its an okay game.

The camara

It dosnt really bother me once ya get used to it its fine. The angle moves as you aquire targets so you can see what your doing. I far prefer that for manuvering than a onboard cam this way you can see the trajectory of missles and try and avoid. There wont be a fix for the cam as they made it to be this way and generally the reception from people about it is good.

It just takes some getting used to.

Shit buddy, have you read some of those reviews?

Hawx

you’re coming round to the camera angle?

Sha8doW's picture

sorry for the confusion..

I forgot to add the quotes.
In short… NO, No i am not. (unless there is a fix or the multiplayer is soooo freaking fantastic
