Apocalyptic Outdoor WLAN/ IPX Trex!
Mornin All,
So the year is finally upon us. Who’s up for a team camping trip later in the year? Not to be lazy, but I think that around my area somewhere would be most reasonable; it is halfway between the bulk of Team IPX, but I have not even scoped out a location yet, I would like to help with finding a place. If we gotta go to QUEENSLAND I wont mind one bit =p
Ok so setting up a wireless game in the middle of nowhere without a router to speak of is probably gonna be tricky to damn near impossible. Half the fun of camping is getting away from as much technology as you can anyway!
We will try and go somewhere with easy access; this is an online gaming team, and as a result, half of us are fat and the other half are on the rather lean side, so lugging a 15kg backpack 10km in and out of a site is out of the question for most of us.
Basic camping gear is all you should need. A full backpack $150-200 backpack like mine is unnecessary if were only going to be a minute away from our vehicles. If we REALLY want to do a REAL trek, then a good backpack is essential.
If you are interested, please let me know. There should be plenty of time to prepare and save a date
A short list of things you should bring:
- A tent; a $150 tent or a $30 tent are pretty much of the same quality. DONT waste money on a “good” tent; were not camping in the Swiss Alps
- AT LEAST 2 torches; LED’s are great, they last seemingly forever
- Cooking and eating utensils; Butane cartridge gas stoves are great, I use a hexi stove myself, for the compactness. Bendy rubber bowls also cut down on precious cargo space.
- Meal food, snacks, and AT LEAST 5 litres of water for each day; protip: Empty coke bottles are your friend, practically indestructible, and don’t go all moldy after ONE week of use like those fucking aluminium flasks
- Handheld GPS unit; Sure theres one in your phone. After your first day of camping, and being lost, you will realise just why you DONT rely on them for survival; I get 24hrs of GPS usage out of my Garmin eTrex, and my phone will stay off and fully charged. However this isnt such a big deal, as there will be enough to go between us, and if we really need to use the phones GPS, then its there incase, but I wouldn’t stake my life on its battery power.
- Warm clothes; Just in case. Spare change of everything would be tops
- A lighter or a box of matches or both! Ive got a flint… Yeah.. Lighter beats a flint… =p
- First Aid kit! Just in case any Norwegians show up and we need to… Render them
unconsciousmedical assistance.. Yess… ;p - A Camera!; because you never know when Shad will dig himself into a hole, or Ozza will rear end a bright red Holden SS.
- IPX Wear; Represent your Team, as well as make yourself look neat for the photo!
I am sure I am missing more then a couple of things.. Anything you can think of that I have not mentioned, please let me know.
NOTE: Some people will say to NEVER reuse soft drink bottles for water! This is because of the BPA lining, which they know is toxic, and they have taken out of baby bottles, however have left it in just about EVERY other type of packaging. My logic is like this; if the bottle once held coca cola, practically phosphorous acid, and THATS ok, then reusing the bottle a couple of times with plain old fucking water shouldn’t be a problem. Maybe if you do this long term, you might have a problem. But one night of camping; your gonna get more toxins breathing in the smoke from the fire then you will from drinking supposedly safe Bisophenol A lined plastic for one or two nights.
We have bit less then a year to get all this sorted everybody. Lets get things organized and get this ball rolling finally on this one; Its been a long time since the last proper Team IPX Trex. I think we are long overdue. Afterwards, if we are in the area, we should go hit up the Skatel, if it is still there, for a nice game of Hockey.
Any more ideas, suggestions, or are you honestly not that interested?
