Out and about

This is where I’m off to tomorrow… Beijing to St Petersberg by train over the next 3 and a half weeks. I doubt there’ll be much in the way of internet connections for most of the journey, but I’ll drop in and say “hi” if I find one in a crazy random place. So glhf for the next month, and I’ll see you all when I get back.

To make life just a bit more stressful Patch, my dalmatian, broke his foot badly yesterday. It was a bit of a shock to get a call from the neighbours that he was in a great deal of pain in the backyard, and the have to rush home from work to carry him into the car and then to the vet. He’s in surgery at the moment getting a metal plate inserted. The vet says this will bring him back to full strength within a few weeks so fingers crossed. Poor Patch :(

Smokin Guns progress

The development of our favourite western themed Quake mod progresses, with the most work put into porting it to the ioquake3 engine. This engine is an evolution of the basic Q3 engine used now, and is the same as you’ll find in World of Padman and Urban Terror.

I compiled it myself today, and it works just fine. Despite no changes to the models or textures, everything looks a lot better in the new engine. The main difference however is the sound, which now actually accurately positions other players, something missing from the current version 1.0.

Even better I can play with this version on any server just fine :) So watch your footsteps, pardners, as now I’ll hear ya stumbling about and shoot ya in the back.

There’s a couple of bugs: I’m having trouble with widescreen resolutions and the buy menu keyboard shortcuts are a bit weird.

I would expect betas of version 1.1 soon enough however, and anyone able to DIY compile their own would get some benefit from doing so.

New maps for Padman

A few have cropped up:

Padbury’s Casino: http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?news&update_id=165

“The map is pretty big, so there is enough space for duels between a dozen of pads. Like in a real casino, there is a pool table, a roulette game, a bar with stools and lots of other stuff.”

Phobos’ Shopping Center: http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?news&update_id=163

“The theme of this map is a mall with many shops and stores like a travel agency, a book shop, a fast food restaurant and lot more. We’re sure there’s something for everybody.”

Harm’s WesternSet (Work-in-progress): http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?news&update_id=166

“This B-Movie-Set is also filled up with many new mapmodels, which were created by DoomDragon especially for this map, e.g. a camera, a gravestone and a quite typical western revolver. It is a map for the CTL (Capture the Lolly) mode.”

Wonder if we can get these onto the GA servers? Can I become a Padman GameOp :)

IPX vs ADA Prac Tuesday Night

ADA are keen for another get together, and Tuesday night looks like prime time for a friendly scrim.

No need to sign up, but if you aren’t exhausted from Monday night’s win (I’m assuming it’s a win ;) then it’d be great to see you all online.

Does the voice-over guy from Internode creep you out?

Seriously… call 13 66 33 and listen to their phone system voiceover for a while.

He’s about the creepiest sounding voice I’ve ever heard.

Oh yeah, I’m now an Internode customer once more. They started offering ADSL2+ in my area (although using Optus infrastructure, not their own) so I switched back. Hopefully my dropouts, lag and other general crappiness have been inflicted on me by Netspace and it will all get better now I’m back in the ‘node fold.

Iron Grip: Warlord Released

http://igwarlord.isotx.com/

I pointed this one out a few months ago. It’s a FPS made from a highly modified Quake 3 engine, with a fantasy/steampunk kind of theme to it. It focuses on big battles with a small group of elite fighters (playable online in multiplayer co-op) defending against invading hordes. It features some RTS features as well.

I first noticed the game due to the inclusion of some of the Padman creators in the team working on this, so you can be sure of the pedigree of the developers :) It’s hardly going to replace ET type games (no versus multiplayer, unlikely to be a strong Aussie community), but I think it looks like fun. Check out the trailer: http://www.moddb.com/games/iron-grip-warlord/videos

The Windows version is out, with Linux soon to follow. Can one of you Windows people download and play the demo for me, so I can work out whether it’s worth the $25 to buy.

Timezone changes

It’s currently daylight savings (GMT+11) in Victoria.

I’m not sure if any other states have this time at the moment, but can someone let me know if we are going to practice at 8pm or 9pm tonight (depending on where you live).

Custom map fun tonight

At least a few MaD players have the new custom map installed, so it’s game on tonight at 8pm. We’ll start on the IPX server with the custom map and move to a booked GA server I have reserved if there’s any issues.

So:

Make sure you have this map downloaded and installed: http://splashdamage.com/node/312

Fatal Race! More DOS game retro goodness

Fatal Racing is one of my old favourite DOS games. Below the break are the instructions for setting it up to work, with IPX network emulation to play 16 player (wow! 16 players in a DOS game!) multiplayer races.
